The shoot for the “Space Lover” music video finished up on Tuesday, shot with my Red One #1304. It was written, directed and produced by Cedrick Chan (ex of ILM). Director of Photography was Roman Baska of Salon (with Salon generously donating studio time, equipment and crew). Editorial and post-production by Peg Leg Productions.
More info coming soon. For now here are some pix. All shots with Red Build 16 Redcode 36 (high quality) with Red 18-55mm Zoom lens; most shots shot at 4K 2:1 (4096×2048 pixels) except for some slow motion, shot at 2K. These pics are images shot by Red, transferred to TIFs in RedCine, then downsized and converted to PNGs in Photoshop.

Nothing but problems on set of a Music video.
——————————————————
First off I am a huge supporter of RED and the camera.
I love the RED ONE when its friendly.
experience
I have D.I.T., Camera operated, color corrected and work flowed for features, several music videos, and shorts.
So I am not a novice by any means.
How ever I was just KILLED on set using build 16.
This week and Last week.
I will talk about this weeks experience.
equipment
2 Red Cameras
music video
artist
2 Grammy award winning artist 11 grammys between the both of them.
Big time DP
His first time working with the RED camera.
So I did my best to make it as painless as possible.
But we experienced once problem after another, I have never had this many problems in such a short time on set.
A: cam fine with minimal problems things I was able to fix on the fly.
Until we plugged in the new remote stop cable by RED.
OH NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
THAT SCREWED EVERYTHING UP! turn it into burst mode and took us multiple times re-boot re-restroing the setting and fudging with it to get it back on track. And then the power stayed stuck on DC while we only used batteries.
B: cam would not boot up more then half the time THIS WAS SO FRUSTRATING AND just horrible.
Then once we did get it to boot up we it would work for 30 seconds maybe less and then freeze show a picture but not allow us to do anything. Record or change menus.
I attempted multiple times to reinstall the Build 16.
And it never successfully found the install.
CF card and or SD card.
Had the rental company replace the camera ASAP.
Then with new camera threwout the day would give us multiple booting issues and would stay stuck in record mode when using CF cards.
The record button would not work and would not allow us to stop recording.
Our only choice to regain any control of the camera was to force boot it off.
And we lost that shot.
It was just a complete mess. Mostly In front of the DP.
He always kept his cool. Until we held up the shots.
So it was a matter of changing out the cameras back and fourth.
Restricting us to 1 camera often.
Like i said I love this camera But DAMN!!!
Im getting killed and to make matters worst we were in a location with no service so tech support was not an option.
Totally scrambling to stableize this.

Dear Red16,
I find your “comment” to my post an irresponsible and less-than-scrupulous attempt to trash Red.
Here’s why:
a)We didn’t have any real problems shooting two music videos with Red in the last three weeks–because of proper preparation. That’s real empirical data. Reposting your “friend” Luis Flores’ report secondhand seems like an attempt to warn off others from shooting music videos with Red. It sounds like: a guy with an agenda–spreading FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) about RED by reposting hearsay.
b)If you were honest or interested in getting to the bottom of the question of “Is Red a good camera to shoot music videos with?” you would also report that Luis Flores got justly trashed (on the same post you link to) for
i)Using a beta firmware build (Build 16) which Red expressly cautions users against using in a for-pay production environment. Luis should have used Build 15–which is stable.
ii)Using an untested cable for the first time on set.
In the same thread of discussion in the post, Luis writes, “I take full blame. I made it up.” I don’t exactly know what he means in that second post. But to any rational neutral observer, it casts doubt on his original claims.
And, you Red16, are irresponsible for quoting his original report without mentioning Luis’ follow-up post.
c)Why not use your real name to post? Take some responsibility for your attack on this new camera. After all, if you’re correct (“Nothing but problems on set of a Music video.”), it will enhance your credibility and authority. Or it it possible that you, in fact, know you’re spreading slander? And slanderers prefer to operate anonymously.
d)You’re not doing your “friend” Luis Flores any favors. To the person reading quickly your comment, it seems like Luis posted the comment–since his signature appears at the bottom. My guess is that Luis would not appreciate this, given that he’s posted some sort of partial retraction.
Dear indie2zero readers:
Red rocks and we shot a couple great music videos here in HK with my Red. I’ll be posting them online soon. The proof is in the pudding. Feel free to contact me if you’re shooting a music video to discuss. The above post–”the unethical quoting the incompetent”–causes me to recall Oscar Wilde’s description of fox-hunting: “The unspeakable in pursuit of the inedible.”
