Business Week reports that HP is studying putting Google’s Android cellphone operating system on netbooks (small cheap pcs good at doing what a majority of the people-hours spent on a pc do: use a web browser to read and interact). And so we need Vista 2 (sorry, Windows 7) less and less. The next shoe to drop (or bite of the lunch) will be enterprises’ wide adoption of Netbooks as enterprise computers. “One laptop per whitecollar worker.” Believe me–it’s happening already, driven by the economic crisis. And the adaptation of swift small lower spec enterprise pcs will in turn accelerate adaptation of office suites (spreadsheets, collaboration spaces, document editors, presentation software) in the “cloud” (SaaS). So just about the only people who’ll need fast high spec pcs will be creatives doing things like photo/video editing and music (locally). And we use Macs generally. Sure, a lot of Windows 7 will be sold (and I hear it’s much better than Vista). But the sound of shrinking market share for Microsoft at both the low-end (Netbooks running Android and Linux) and high-end (Macs) is loud and clear…
